A. argenteus, which is the direct competitor of A. speciosus, and is also widely distributed across the Japanese archipelago - taken together, the two Apodemus are the most abundant rodents in Japan (Abe, 1994; Sekijima & Sone, 1994). There is some evidence that A. speciosus exerts some competitive pressure over A. argenteus (Sekijima & Sone

Two species of field mice, Apodemus argenteus and A. speciosus, occur in sympatry across the Japanese archipelago. The inter- and intraspecific patterns of morphological differentiation have been evaluated, using a Fourier analysis of the mandible outline.

The relative importance of the effect of insular isolation and latitudinal climatic gradient The size and spatial distribution of home ranges in two sympatric field mouse species, Apodemus speciosus and Apodemus argenteus, were revealed by the capture-recapture method in a temperate deciduous forest from June 1987 to June 1990. In A. speciosus, the home ranges of males were significantly larger tha those of females, and overlapped with Apodemus species with the five variables selected by stepwise method. Fig. 2. Although both species are omnivorous, previous studies demonstrated that A. argenteus typically eats a wide variety of food items than A. speciosus . Apodemus argenteus. Quaternary specimens of A. argenteus were smaller in size than their living representatives. The interspecific size ratio between the two Japanese Apodemus was larger on smaller islands and at higher latitudes, and there has been a decrease in the size ratio between the two Apodemus since the LGM.
Effect of arboreal activity on nesting site selection in Apodemus argenteus was examined by using nest boxes, a footprint recording technique, and live‐trapping. Although the breeding season of A. argenteus was from April to September, the use of nest boxes placed on the trunks of trees was observed only from late July to September when use of the arboreal habitat by A. argenteus became active. In the various woody environ-ments which are sympatric areas of Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus, the difference, of habitat preference between the two species was studied. A. speciosus had a strong preference for rich ground vegetation, and in fact many individuals were captured here. Apodemus argenteus Temminck (original combination Mus argenteus) was published in Fauna Japonica, Mamm. 51; pages 41-60 of Fauna Japonica were published in 1845 and not in 1844 (see Sherborn and Jentink, 1895: 149)
